Welcome from the Commander

Greetings and welcome to the AMVETS Department of Connecticut Web Site. This Web site has been developed in order to help people easily find information about AMVETS. We are a non profit charitable organization whose purpose is to help our veterans. In addition we are an organization who looks to support our communities and state. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Dare programs, Special Olympics, USO, school projects, Masonic Home, community projects, nursing homes, VA Hospitals, Ambulance funds, homeless veterans and food shelters are just a few of the projects that we have supported in the past.

This past year our Service Foundation awarded nine $1000.00 scholarships to high school students to help them continue their education through college.

We have VAVS Representatives and their volunteers that work out of three VA Hospitals within Connecticut. They hold programs such a Christmas parties, Because We Care Day, picnics, Halloween parties, Valentine Day parties and of course bingos which are the patients favorite. Many of these programs are funded through our Service Foundation and from generous donations made by people like you. In addition we hold many of these same events in area Nursing Homes.

We have volunteers that go into our area schools and teach our children about our flag. They have various programs which include videos, handouts and hands-on-training on how to fold the flag properly.

In addition to AMVETS we also have subordinate organizations who work in conjunction with AMVETS. These organizations include, The AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of AMVETS, and Sad Sacks (which is the fun and honor group of AMVETS) each of these groups run their own events and help support AMVETS in our goals.

We have two AMVETS Posts who have Military Funeral Honor Guards who perform final honors to our Veterans who have passed away. You will see many of our Posts participate in area parades and events throughout the year.

To be eligible to join AMVETS you must be a veteran who has serve honorably since WWII or a veteran still serving. Reserves and National Guard are also eligible to join AMVETS. If you are interested please contact one of our local posts or State Officers who can assist you in joining. If you would like to start a post in your area please contact Adjutant Albert J. Duff at area code 860-887-6065 or e-mail at albert_j_duff@sbcglobal.net. He can assist you in getting started and work with you through the process.

Yours in AMVETS;

Richard Bonneau
